One of my best friends owns and runs a popular boxing gym in Ballito, KZN and recently called me with a proposition. Whenever Tyron calls me, it either involves an invite to a sparring session with a couple of locals, or to organise a get-together for the next major fight night like Pacquiao VS Mayweather, or a braai night when the Lions are playing rugby. Neither of these three were a possibility as it was still too early in the year for any of them to be a reality.
Before my mind could wonder any longer, Tyron told me about the upcoming ‘Shed That Spread‘ challenge – a fitness challenge with a twist, that has gained a phenomenal following on the North Coast of Durban. I would be lying if I had said that I wasn’t familiar with the challenge as there had been some pretty incredible media coverage of the ‘average’ gym members that had gone through remarkable physical transformations. A simple look at the Ringside Boxing Gym Facebook page reveals a whole host of guys and girls of all ages and sizes who have drastically changed their appearances.
Just over 3 years ago, I had approached Tyron to train me for 8-weeks when I entered an online fitness challenge. As a qualified biokineticist and pro boxer, Tyron has an exceptional understanding of just how beneficial boxing training can be for everyone from the elite athlete to the middle-aged housewife. Core strength, along with balance & endurance, make up the fundamentals of his approach and the group classes are best described as HIIT – High Intensity Interval Training. With this in mind, Tyron pushed me beyond what I thought was physically possible and my approach to gyming was forever changed.
With all due respect, I can’t step into one of those major gym franchises without a massive feeling of ‘boredom’ that taints my treadmill or weight-lifting session. And it seems that the general consensus is that more and more people are looking for that something ‘different’, a place that has fewer mirrors, and more individual focus. For me, that is exactly (and more) what Ringside Boxing Gym offers and is why I have agreed to be a part of this year’s 12-week ‘Shed That Spread’ challenge which kicks off on the 1st of February. Rumour has it that local radio DJ and KZN public figure, Damon Beard has also entered the challenge so I am sure there will be a ton of interest in this year’s challenge!
If you are keen to do something different, learn how to box, train like Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, and kick 2016 in the nuts, then get on the program with this year’s Shed That Spread challenge – I guarantee it will be life changing. My last 8-week challenge was good, but I’m hoping to do even better this time around, especially since I will have an extra 4 weeks of training in the mix.
