One of my favourite things to witness is a friend accomplishing a dream. Small or big, the look of excitement splashed across a beaming smile is comparable to things like a first kiss, or even better, surfing your first barrel. Every word, as they describe their future plans and world domination desires, are soaked with passion and enthusiasm that even Richard Branson would approve of.
My latest gem of a find is fellow surfer and friend, Deon Knoetze’s surf-slash-coffee shop hidden on the North Coast of KZN, in the sleepy surf community of Salt Rock. Aptly named ‘Find The Stoke’, this quaint shop exudes that old school surf hangout feel, with a unique vibe which most modern-day retail surf outlets seem to have lost. The basic necessities like great coffee and free WiFi are of course on offer, but the real kicker is the great clothing on offer – locally designed and made thanks to Big D’s dream a few years back.
Assorted surf apparel ranging from classic T’s to modern/trendy cuts, flat peak hats, hoodies and even grommets (surf lingo for children, kids, rats etc.) clothing – Find The Stoke has a unique look and feel that separates the range from the big name surf brands. My favourite design element is the classic VW Kombi loaded with surfboards on the roof – a great South African touch with vintage surf stoke that reminds me of early morning surf missions.
If you’re a local in the area or just visiting the coast in the holidays, I’d highly recommend you pay a visit to Find The Stoke surf and coffee shop – another great addition to the North Coast of KZN that makes this little town one of the warmest places to be all year round.
